2020 DRIFTWOOD ARTIFACTS MERITAGE

41/36/20/3% petit verdot/malbec/cabernet sauvignon/ other. Matured for 16 months in French oak (25% new). Delicious, in a word. There is plentiful tannin – fine, soft and shapely – and loads of fresh fruit: blackberries, raspberries, pomegranate, blood plums and red apples; with spice and additional flavours galore (dark chocolate, nutmeg, star anise, a strap or two of red licorice, fresh tobacco leaves and fennel). This is very good. EL 14% alc.

What’s special about this wine, and when do you believe it will be at its peak for drinking?

The name Meritage connotates to a red or white Bordeaux blend. Ours is a red Bordeaux blend and like any quality Bordeaux red wine it will reward maturation in bottle from seven to 15 years, allowing the flavours and textures to harmoniously amalgamate over time.
