2021 NIKOLA ESTATE THE SURREALIST

- Marcello Fabretti

38/24/16/10/7/5% montepulciano/mencia/barbera/ grenache/nero d’Avola/arinto; 74%/26% Swan Valley/ Geographe. Whole-berry ferment, hand plunged, cofermented in old French oak, matured for 3 months prior to early bottling. This is really smart. There’s a lot going on, but by virtue of the co-ferment, the varieties are absolutely and seamlessly integrated. It is bloody, gritty, savoury, salty and yet fresh. The lush purple and red fruit is only half the story; the tobacco leaf, salt bush, brine, clove, nutmeg, star anise and mountain herbs are the other half. Awesome. EL 15.2% alc.

What will drinkers be rewarded with if they put this wine in their cellar? And at what point do you believe this wine will be at its peak for drinking?

This wine is a very unusual blend, and as such it could have quite an interesting cellaring journey. Having never made a blend consisting of these six different varietals before, it will be a learning experience for me, too. I think it will develop for a decade.
