2018 CLARENDON HILLS ONKAPARINGA SYRAH, MCLAREN VALE

- SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR, CO-OWNER Alex Bratasiuk

Perhaps my favourite of all renditions of syrah here, at least for now. Not the wine to bide time over. In fact, I’d be drinking this up. Like drinking the richest, most nourishing miso soup, so laden is it with iodine and umami. Boysenberry, clove, barbecued meats and Asian five-spice. The tannins, thick but more svelte than the other cuvées. This drives long and relatively fresh. NG 14.6% alc.

$120 / 2028

What is special about the vineyard this wine was made from? This is an exquisite old vine vineyard planted in the 1940s within the highest reaches of Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The vineyard name Onkaparinga is derived from the glacial cut, Onkaparinga Gorge, the vineyard itself bounds. The site geology is composed of heavily decomposed ironstone, shale, schist and quartz fragments found pebbled throughout some of the oldest geology on from the primordial Proterozoic era.
