LGBTQI+ TERMS EXPLAINED
LGBTQI+: Short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and more.
Gender identity: The inner sense of oneself as man, woman, masculine, feminine, neither or both.
Transgender/ trans/gender diverse: A personal gender identity for people whose assigned gender at birth does not match their internal gender identity. Transgender/trans or gender- diverse people may choose to live their lives with or without modifying their body, dress or legal status, and with or without medical treatment and surgery. They may also use a variety of different pronouns including he, she, they, ze, hir.
Non- binary: An umbrella term to describe any gender identity that does not fit into the gender binary of male and female. Cisgender/cis: People whose gender corresponds to the sex they were assigned at birth. Intersex: People who are born with physical sex characteristics that don’t fit medical and social norms for female or male bodies.
Queer: Describes a range of sexual orientations and gender identities. Although once used as a derogatory term, the term queer is often used as an umbrella term to describe the full range of LGBTQI+ identities. Transphobia: Hatred and fear of transgender and gender- diverse people.
