Aside from snakes, the north-east is a known habitat for the Forrester kangaroo and Tasmanian devils – and while we don’t see any of the latter creatures in the flesh, we do spot their prints and plenty of scat. There are also hundreds of species of birds, from bald eagles to muttonbirds, which Carleeta and her family consider a delicacy and still hunt annually. This staggering diversity of flora and fauna once attracted the largest Indigenous community in Tasmania: “You didn’t have to go far to find different resources,” explains Carleeta.
