THE FRIENDSHIP OF PETS

-

I loved your editorial about your cat, Ash and your dog, Pippi in the June issue. When my husband went into permanent care, I had to adjust to many changes – including moving house. But now as I walk my elderly corgi, Basil each morning and evening, I meet the neighbours, as well as the local children on their way to school.

Basil and I have such a happy start to each day. The children give Basil cuddles, and they greet me, too. I am reprimanded if we miss a day. Several school parents say they have heard all about Basil, and are pleased to meet him. Having a pet enriches our lives, both young and old. I’m so lucky to have him. Thank you for your story. Pamela I was very moved by your story about Ash. It mirrors our experience with our beloved cat, who is now nearing the end of her life. She, too, adopted us – simply strolling in one morning about 15 years ago and never leaving. Despite our best efforts, we never discovered where she came from. She is slender and elegant, with bright green eyes. As a youngster she was feisty and fast, terrorising the local mice and conducting running skirmishes with the tabby next door. But now she also, to my great sadness, is experiencing dementia and I fear we will soon face a similar decision to yours. Your story made me reflect on how we can be blessed sometimes with an unexpected gift, that makes its home in our heart and our lives that much richer.
