NEW YORK, NEW YORK
Hudson Yards is New York City’s newest neighbourhood, located on Manhattan’s West Side. Hailed as the largest private real estate development in the US, when finished, it will comprise 4,000 residences, multiple office towers, public parks, over 100 shops, and a vast restaurant collection.
The first stage of the site, constructed on a platform over the city’s railyards near the Hudson River, opened in March, with the beehive-like structure called The Vessel. As the centrepiece of the public square, The Vessel is a copper-coloured staircase to nowhere. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio with 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, 2,500 steps and 80 landings, this landmark is already very popular with tourists.
Also newly opened is The Shed, a cultural organisation that commissions and presents original works of art. Located where The High Line meets Hudson Yards, this interesting building is a padded, movable structure home to performance and exhibition spaces. A real must-see if you’re in the city. hudsonyardsnewyork.com, theshed.org
