SMART THINKING

We share the top reasons why autumn is the ideal time to visit these unique islands.

If you want to visit the Galápagos Islands, autumn may just be the best time to do so.

When it comes to witnessing an incredible diversity of plant and animal species, there’s no destination quite like the Galápagos Islands. The archipelago in the Pacific Ocean is a province of Ecuador, despite the fact that it lies about 1,000km off its coast. Its isolated terrain – which is fiercely protected by UNESCO – allows for its incredible biodiversity. Its islands are also home to some of the highest levels of endemism (species found nowhere else) on Earth. If you’ve always wanted to visit Galápagos for its wildlife and adventure, now is the time to start planning. Cruise specialists Quasar Expeditions say autumn (September to November) is the best time to visit – for these three reasons.

1 FEWER CROWDS

For travellers who enjoy the luxury of space, and the chance to soak up the peace and quiet of nature without being rushed, autumn offers the best opportunity for doing just that. With fewer people looking to have their turn at swimming or snorkelling among sea lions, photographing wildlife, or just exploring the islands, travellers will be able to enjoy more opportunities for exploring the islands in peace.

2 MORE WILDLIFE

Whales and dolphins in the waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands are at their peak numbers and are most active during autumn. The giant Galápagos sea turtles nest in autumn and the penguins are also at their most active – particularly throughout September, when they can be seen frolicking in the water.

3 MILD WEATHER

One of the biggest advantages to visiting the Galápagos in autumn is the weather. While the Galápagos is relatively moderate in its temperature changes throughout the year, it does have distinct wet and dry seasons. Between September and December, however, the islands experience the mildest and driest season of the year.
