HAVE A GANDER

• Gander International Airport was once the largest airfield on the planet. It also serves as an alternative landing site for space shuttle missions.

• The Beatles, Mohammed Ali, Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro have all stopped in Gander.

• The airport at Gander became the main staging point for the movement of Allied aircraft from North America to Europe during World War II.

• Planes travelling across the Atlantic had to stop in Gander to refuel up until the 1960s, when jets with a longer range were invented.
