A place where dramatic mountains tower above striking beaches.

-

A cluster of archipelagos make up the Society Islands of French Polynesia, with Tahiti as the largest of them. They’re a place where dramatic mountains tower above striking black sand beaches, and colourful marine life thrives in sea caves and coral reefs. In 2012, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands created the world’s largest shark sanctuary. You can now find more than 20 shark species in these protected waters, including lemon, tiger and black fin sharks, which all play an important role in the marine ecosystem, and French Polynesian mythology. Because of this, swimming with these friendly (and harmless) sharks is one of the most popular and exciting activities in Tahiti.
