OUR WINNING POEM
This month’s winning poet, Monika C. Zaper says, “I always think of myself as a visual artist and I boxed myself into that. But poetry found me.” We love the simplicity of Monika’s poem and how it says so much about the lives of three generations of her family in so few words. The repetition in the first line of each stanza reiterates the fact that although each generation’s circumstances were vastly different, the artistic impulse was the same. “My father and his mother felt the need to acknowledge what was going on,” she says. “And when I read poetry that resonated with me, I realised it was also a suitable way for me to express life’s emotions.”
