DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT
Adult ADHD is normally diagnosed by a specialist clinician such as a psychiatrist. The recommended treatment could include medication, behavioural therapy, psychotherapy, social skills training, time management training, emotional counselling, family counselling and support, and educational strategies. Psychostimulants are the most common medications used to treat ADHD. They are thought to work by altering the availability of particular brain chemicals or neurotransmitters (dopamine and noradrenaline) in regions of the brain involved with behaviour inhibition, impulse control, attention and working memory. There is no recognised ‘cure’ for ADHD. health.nsw.gov.au
