For obvious reasons we have a love/hate relationship with sugar. It tastes so good, but can feel so bad. And as you know by now, we’re all eating far too much of it – roughly 14 teaspoons of sugar a day according to the latest Australian Health Survey. That’s more than double the maximum amount recommended by the World Health Organization to stay healthy – around six teaspoons. Despite its deliciousness and prevalence in our daily diet, sugar is not doing us much good. Just ask your dentist: sugary foods and sweet drinks cause tooth decay.
“Sugar, syrups and fruit juice concentrates provide empty kilojoules,” says dietitian Karissa Woolfe. “They’re added to make food and drinks taste more desirable. But the danger is you can have too much sneaking in, without you even realising it,” she says. Too much of the sweet stuff can lead to weight gain, which is linked to a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure… greeeat. And it’s not just the obvious sources of sugar you need to look out for (think biscuits, sweet drinks). “Around 75 per cent of the sugar you eat comes from pre-packaged foods and drinks,” warns Woolfe, including everyday pantry staples and products marketed as “healthier”.
