Soothing summer sips

No longer are your only choices black or green tea – there’s now a wide range of fruity brews on offer. Our dietitian has hand-picked five summer-themed cuppas to add to your tea repertoire.

One drinks of the in most the world, commonly a daily consumed cuppa has a long list of health benefits. But during summer, a piping hot English Breakfast mightn’t satisfy. Enter the ever-expanding range of fruit teas that can be enjoyed hot or chilled. You might be wondering, though, how these trendy teas stack up in terms of nutrition – so, let’s start with the basics. Black, green, oolong and white tea all come from the same plant ( Camellia sinensis), which is processed in different ways to produce a range of teas. Research has linked these teas to improved diabetes control as well as reduced risk of heart disease, mostly due to their antioxidan­ts.

Herbal teas, on the other hand, are usually made from herbs, spices, flowers and fruit rather than the tea plant, so they offer different benefits.

Chamomile, for example, can help you sleep, while dandelion has been associated with relief from constipati­on. But, many other claims – like making skin glow or speeding up metabolism – haven’t been confirmed by science (yet!). Regardless, these teas are virtually kilojoule-free and are a great way to spice up your water intake. Here are five we like:
