DON’T LET OTHER PEOPLE GET YOU DOWN

-

Having support for your goals is really helpful, but some of the people in your life may undercut your efforts. Human nature is partly to blame: we tend to hang out with others who are at the same level of health consciousness as we are, and experts believe we may unconsciously work to keep those relationship ecologies in check.

As a result, our loved ones may be less than thrilled when we start opting for salads while they’re still eating French fries. But you don’t want to ditch your family and friends, so here’s how to deal with…

THE FRIEND WHO MAKES CUTTING COMMENTS

Dietitian Amy Stephens tells her clients to focus on their own intentions. Why is fitting in a vegetable at every meal or limiting sweets important to you? Get clear on that, and it’ll be easier to let little digs roll off you. You don’t need to justify your choices to anyone.

THE FAMILY MEMBER WHO SHOVES TEMPTATION UNDER YOUR NOSE

Avoid meals with that person when you’re forming new habits and hang out together elsewhere, say, go for a walk rather than a coffee. Once your changes are second nature, you’ll find it easier to say no to foods that don’t support your goals.

THE PARTNER OR KIDS WHO STILL WANT JUNK FOOD

Have them personalise it. For instance, ask your husband to buy single portions of ice-cream or pick up flavours he loves but you don’t.
