From the editor
This issue is a celebration of Prevention’s 10th anniversary, so we’ve been reflecting on the incredible breakthroughs in our understanding of health and wellness that have happened in that time. Back in 2009, when the magazine launched, no-one knew about the microbiome and the incredible role that our gut bacteria play in our health. And “mindfulness” was a byword for good manners, not a powerful tool for managing stress and cultivating a happier life. So this month, our feature writer Stephanie Osfield revisits some of the most important discoveries of the past decade.
It’s been a privilege for all of us here at Prevention to be able to share these insights with you, our loyal readers. Working on this magazine has had a positive effect on our own lives as well. I asked our team to explain how working here had changed them. See how their experiences compare with the way Prevention has influenced your own life for the better:
Lyn Justice, chief sub-editor “In this crazy-busy world, I’ve found yoga, meditation and walking can help keep me grounded. Since working on Prevention, I’ve found the scientific evidence that backs this up. So I’m more confident than ever about using mindfulness and ‘the breath’ to get me through hectic deadlines.”
Karen Berge, art director “My take-home from working at Prevention is the inspiration I get from the amazing women I have the pleasure of meeting – hearing their stories and admiring their strength and positive attitude to life. These women motivate me to get out there, give things a go and to take time for me.”
Elly Glendenning, digital coordinator “Working here has inspired me to try so many new mindfulness and fitness exercises – you definitely wouldn’t have seen me doing Pilates or meditating pre- Prevention!
I feel so much better for it.”
We love receiving your feedback, so let me know what you enjoy each issue and what we can do better, so that we’re a meaningful part of your life for the 10 years to come!
