This issue, I discovered a very apt word for our times: infobesity. It graphically conveys how easily we can overstuff ourselves with bleak news feeds, too much social media and general information overload. It all conspires to make life feel overwhelming. Not surprisingly, as author Julia Hobsbawm shares in
“The Simple Life” (page 42), many of us are yearning for a less manic existence, where the world no longer shrieks at us from every direction. She shows us ways you can create a calmer, more satisfying life by making easy tweaks to your daily routine.
I met this month’s warm and inspiring cover star, Sally Obermeder, a few weeks after her TV show, The Daily Edition, was cancelled. For someone who’s been through so much – surviving breast cancer after her first daughter was born – she’s quite an inspiration as she navigates her own ‘new normal’ away from our TV screens. One of her inspiring habits is what she calls “book-ending the day” with something nice for herself: It might be as simple as a nourishing, nutritious smoothie for breakfast or soaking in a fragrant bath.
As she points out (on page 46), we’re great at giving TLC to others, but not so good at taking the time to nurture ourselves. Yet right now, it’s never been more important to really take care of you. This issue is packed with inspiration to support you in looking after your health. Making simple, positive changes isn’t difficult, it isn’t expensive, and it’s within everyone’s reach.
Which brings me to our exciting new event that I invite every one of you to be a part of – our first Prevention Virtual Walk on Sunday, October 11. It’s real in the sense that you really do walk, but you can do it anywhere, any time of the day. We have a step-by-step training guide starting on page 70. Make the commitment and sign up (on page 13) and receive a host of extra benefits and great prizes! The staff here are already lacing up their shoes in preparation. Training is especially fun when you can enlist a partner, so who will you rope in? We’ll all be sharing photos on social media via #preventionwalk.
I can’t wait to see yours.
Enjoy this issue!
