Amid the blazes, one couple in Taree opened their home to the most vulnerable victims of the fires. Christeen and Paul McLeod sheltered 24 rescued koalas in their living room. The couple, who have looked after koalas for almost 30 years, have asked people to donate tiny mittens to shield the koalas’ burns against infection. “We do this and hope that we can save some of them,” Christeen told the ABC.
