The Australian Women's Weekly

From the desk of The Weekly’s Nicole Byers

- Nicole Byers EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

All our Christmases came at once this month at The Weekly, literally. On top of putting together our bumper festive issue – which we hope you enjoy – we have been beavering away on a TV special with Network 10 (imaginatively) called, Christmas with The Australian Women’s Weekly.

That meant double the ham, double the peace and joy and, crucially for me, double the trifle. As far as I’m concerned, nothing tastes more like Christmas than a mouthful of jelly, custard, cream and soggy sponge. So I was thrilled when The Weekly’s Food Director, Fran Abdallaoui, let me into the kitchen to help her create one for the show.

The origins of my trifle obsession are unclear but legendary among my extended family, who are all pavlova lovers. In fact, for the past 10 years, my dear mum has made her signature trifle just for me. I then proceed to eat a serve with every meal (yes, even breakfast!), often on my sister’s couch in front of the cricket, until it’s finished.

What I’ve come to realise, though, is that it’s the tradition the trifle has come to represent, as much as the sweet layers of cakey goodness, that I cherish (sorry mum).

As I discuss in my chat with the gorgeous Megan Gale (page 20), taking time out of our hectic lives to just be in the moment and enjoy life’s simple pleasures is vitally important – at this time of year more than ever.

Our story with remarkable Lindt

Cafe siege survivor Louisa Hope (page 30), and how she is turning hate into kindness, will leave you rejoicing for the power of the human spirit. While our journey to battling Aussie town Thallon (page 64), to hear how they are fighting back to save their community, will have you cheering for people power.

Of course, it is those affected by the horrific bush fires who are in our deepest thoughts this Christmas (see page 15 for how you can help). It’s a timely reminder to be thankful for all we have and to practise compassion and generosity where we can.

To you and yours, from all of us at The Weekly, we wish a happy, healthy and harmonious holiday.
