STERILIZING LAMP

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, a group of Chinese Designers have put their talents to work developing public health solutions as part of the nonprofit project Create Cures (CC). The contribution of founder and Beijing-based designer Frank Chou is an elegant, white Sterilizing Lamp, composed of an orb-like shade over a tray. In addition to adding a mid-century minimalist flair, it emits a glowing light in interior spaces. But the lamp is also highly functional in today’s world where sterilization is key. Upon arriving home, the user puts everyday objects – mobile phone, keys, wallet – in the tray, then presses the cover body to activate the internal ultraviolet light source. After 60 seconds, the cover automatically pops up, and the items are disinfected. Chou calls this “unconscious design”, whereby users don’t need to alter their daily habits to engage with new objects.
