BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE: THE BOUTIQUE IN 1960S COUNTERCULTURE
1960s Chelsea was an epicenter of Swinging London, promoting values of freedom, individuality and experimentation amid a socio-political climate in flux. And its fashion boutiques were vocal conveyers of this countercultural messaging. They activated new shopping and buying trends, exemplified by small runs mixed with vintage, leaving an indelible mark on today’s retail landscape. An upcoming exhibition explores this ephemeral history with examples including Granny Takes A Trip, Hung On You, Biba, and designers Alice Pollack, Mr. Fish, Tommy Nutter, Thea Porter and Ossie Clark. Their wide body of work presents an explosion of color, pattern and decoration, rethinking gender norms and blending psychedelia with 19th century, Far and Middle Eastern aesthetics in garments, graphic and interior design.
