DIOR + BALENCIAGA: THE KINGS OF COUTURE AND THEIR LEGACIES

-

Two of the most notable fashion designers of the 20th century in one exhibition – for the first time, the museum at the New York Fashion Institute of Technology is showing works by both Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, together. The Frenchman, Dior, (1905-1957) and the Spaniard, Balenciaga, (1895-1972) played a key part in Paris’ fame as a city of fashion after the Second World War. Both embodied a unique aesthetic – yet the similarities in their signature design styles become clear when we see pieces by each couturier staged alongside each other. All the designs in the exhibition come from the museum’s permanent collection. The works by these two kings of couture are presented with pieces by the generation that followed, including Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan and Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior, and Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga.
