100 2017 TAYLOR’S VARGELLAS VINHA VELHA

A work of art from 80 to 120 yearold vines. Overwhelmi­ngly fragrant: liquorice, cinnamon, allspice, red pepper, fruit remains in the background. On the palate gripping, dense, complex, intense minerality. Extract and smoothness, sweetness and acidity are at one. There is great density, everything falls into place. The wine has great length with the greatest homogeneit­y.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflection­s, delicate brightenin­g on the rim. Dark forest fruit underlaid with fine herbs, ripe plums, a hint of liquorice and cassis, delicate nougat, candied orange zest, attractive bouquet. Powerful, juicy, highly elegant, ripe cherries, fine supporting tannins, mineral, very good freshness, fine chocolate touch on the finish, lasts for minutes.

Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflection­s, very delicate brightenin­g on rim. Dark minerality, black cherries, pleasant tobacco notes underlaid herbal spice, a hint of blackberri­es and slate. Complex, dense body, textured with impressive­ly integrated sweetness, firm tannins, great freshness and finesse, black berry, chocolate and a touch of dried fig on the finish lasts for minutes. Simply world class.

Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflection­s. Dark berry fruit underlaid with violets, blackberry confit, fine minerality, a hint of white chocolate, very delicate bouquet. On the palate this is juicy, a texture like velvet and silk, fine, ripe tannins, ripe cherries, delicate liquorice, dried fruit on the finish, remains very long, full of finesse, already incredibly seductive, certain ageing potential, patience will be rewarded.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflection­s, delicate brightenin­g on rim. Notes of fine black cherries, delicate liquorice, subtle herbal spice, dark slate minerality, black pepper. Substantia­l, powerful, present alcohol, berry fruit, taut, supporting tannins. On the finish ripe plums, dried fruit, chocolate, cardamom and star anise on the finish, has good length and certain ageing potential.

Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflection­s, delicate brightenin­g on rim. Notes of dried plums, candied oranges, dark cherries, some nougat, delicate hints of spice. On the palate this is juicy with notes of dark chocolate, integrated tannins, elegant and lasting, accessible style, mineral finish. Already well developed, but has potential to age for several decades.
