School of Hard Knucks

My Three Sons and Baseball's Wildest Pitch

Description

A helicopter dad nearly spins out of control as his sons struggle to master the knuckleball—and perhaps save baseball’s most storied pitch from extinction.

The knuckleball is the only skill that can elevate an athlete without a superjock’s speed, strength, or explosive power to the Hall of Fame. Thrown without spin, it darts around unpredictably for reasons physicists and engineers labor to explain. It’s a secret weapon every pitcher should want to master, so why is the knuckleball close to extinction?

When a father discovers his baseball-crazed sons have the knack for the knuck, they begin a decade-long, cross-country quest to perfect the pitch. Along the way they meet the greatest to throw it, the scientists investigating its mysterious movement, sabermetricians, and executives who hope to resurrect it. The aspiring knucklers also learn lessons they’ll use off the field, proving that when life throws them curves, they have something to throw back.

Reviews

“Gaffney almost makes the knuckleball sexy and religious, two things close to my heart, in this magical tale of baseball's most mysterious pitch and its power to connect a father and son. I was shocked to discover how I was connected to this journey—and delighted.”

Ron Shelton, writer and director of Bull Durham and White Men Can’t Jump

“This book reminds us that the heart of baseball isn’t in the big leagues—it’s in backyards, bus rides, and the gritty belief that anything is possible.”

Joe Garner, six-time New York Times bestselling author

“This is more than a book about a pitch: It’s a story about growing up, and seeing people in full—faults and all. Gaffney shows how baseball mirrors life itself. A moving memoir for anyone who believes baseball teaches us far more than how to play a game.”

Sandy Dean, A’s Vice Chairman

“Brian Gaffney’s School of Hard Knucks is a home run—a heartfelt, hilarious, and gripping tale of a dad and his sons’ determination to master the knuckleball, a pitch that defies physics and sabermetrics. From backyard bullpens to legends like Phil Niekro and Charlie Hough, it’s a must-read for anyone who’s ever believed in the long shot.”
