Four pictures that tell more of the story

-

page 26 — the hitchhiker’s leathers • Among the gallery of portraits in the early pages of this issue, we featured Igor, a salesman at menswear store Husbands. He talked about his leather jacket and how it reminded him of a 1980s TV character. In case that didn’t ring any bells, here’s something to jog your memory. This is what the hero – and his leather jacket – looked like in the HBO series The Hitchhiker.

page 45 — johnny’s native american necklace •

In our reportage from New Mexico on the Turquoise Trail, we mentioned a few of Harpo's celebrity clients – including Johnny Hallyday. So as not to leave you wondering, we thought we’d show you this photo of the French superstar snapped in 1974 on a motorbike road trip through Death Valley, California. One question remains unanswered, though: did Hallyday buy this necklace locally or did it come from Harpo? We'll probably never know.

page 58 — ralph lauren’s salomons • In our profile of Salomon’s meteoric rise, we mentioned Ralph Lauren’s penchant for the French brand and his first appearance in XA Pros after a fashion show in December 2005. Here’s a photo of that moment of glory for your edification.

One minor addendum: we find the maestro’s outfit that day rather perplexing. What’s your take?

page 70 — serge gainsbourg’s sunglasses • In the “Sunglasses” scatter chart below, the Pierre

Marly shades sported by Serge Gainsbourg throughout the 1980s score well. This is what they look like, just so you know. In fact, the very pair worn by Gainsbourg sold at a Drouot auction in 2016 for just over €2,000. The same sunglasses – not worn by the singer – are currently available at Maison Gainsbourg in Rue de Verneuil, Paris, for a lot less.
