www.belonsoho.com There was a time in the early Noughties when Elgin Street was the place to go for a thriving bar and restaurant scene. Sadly, those days are long past and one would be hard-pressed to find a restaurant or bar worth raving about on this now-quiet street. Belon is the notable exception. Set up like a modern and bright French bistro with a pseudo-secret bar upstairs for apero or digestifs, Belon is known for a number of dishes, which thankfully are always available. The whole roasted Bresse chicken is easily the best in town, and absolutely must be devoured with the buttery potatoes garnished perfectly with peas and bacon. Seafood lovers must order the phenomenally seasoned yet restrained oyster tartare; the salade nicoise with Japanese shima aji is also a firm favourite. Those with a sweet tooth should save room for the millefeuille: a classic and always satisfying end to the meal. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, with special mention going to the sommelier, who is always accommodating and attentive. Those who love wine will want to head to the restaurant’s hidden bar, Upstairs at Belon, located precisely above the dining room.
