But somehow Mercedes Me works, particularly in its new location, a few doors down Queen’s Road Central from its previous setting. It’s brighter and more open here – just make sure to head upstairs where diners are less exposed and large ‘M’ motifs emblazoned on concrete walls achieve a contemporary cool. Here, too, a warm welcome awaits from staff knowledgeable of both food and wine offerings. The advice is to choose three to four small plates and one large if sharing, leaving room for dessert. Flavours and textures have been carefully considered throughout and dishes take inspiration from around the world, ranging from Germany, in the spirit of the brand (there’s a good selection of German wine, too), to Asia, and all are well-executed, just often not served at optimal temperatures – disappointing considering the proximity of the open kitchen.
