The legacy of Gaddi’s sets the tone for the evening. Entering the restaurant is a 65-year-step back in time with a décor of classic European opulence. Not long ago the style of Gaddi’s could be considered out-dated in terms of both décor and cuisine, but there was quite some charm this time around. Being showered with attention by the personable staff and the fussy formality made good old-fashioned dining exciting while the live band invigorated a remarkably empty dining room.

The menu is classic/contemporary French—hints of Escoffier blend with nouveau French. Execution and composition were textbook fine dining, such as in Kristal caviar with cauliflower, almonds and tonka beans—an elegant starter with subtle flavours. The pan-seared duck liver was of exquisite quality, but it was the same texture as the accompanying flavourless figs. The roasted pigeon glazed with lavender was a redeeming grace. The richly reduced sauced was aromatic and powerful, highlighting the pigeon’s lavender crust without making it too floral. French cuisine is alive and well at Gaddi’s, making it still worth a visit to experience the grandeur of mid-century European dining in Hong Kong.
