A large menu of dependable, high-quality Japanese classics such as sushi, teppanyaki and tempura is well-executed, and delivered by a prompt kimono-clad staff who are knowledgeable and friendly. But it’s the chef’s kaiseki most diners come here for, and with good reason. Spanning an elaborate multi-course meal, the traditional set is composed of myriad small dishes that perfectly capture the depth of haute Japanese dining. The variety is a delight: a cold simmered vegetable starter is followed by a steamed dish of sweet corn egg custard with sea urchin and crab sauce, then fresh and buttery sashimi. There’s a grilled dish and a simmered one— eel in hot pot served with scallion, chives and seared tofu—and rice to wrap the meal, either in the form of sushi or scorched in a stone pot, piled with more eel. The whole experience is gratifying, well-paced and presented in beautiful wares. Plenty of premium sakes make for extra bonus points.
