Zuma still stands proud as one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in the city, as evidenced by how it pulses with activity every day of the week—whether it’s for after work drinks, weekend brunch or an evening supper. The setting still has the old school cosmopolitan vibe, with pumping music, closely packed tables and dim lighting, but the food is still fresh after all these years. Spinning premium Japanese ingredients with punchy flavours, Zuma’s menu is a fun traverse through contemporary izakaya fare with signatures such as sliced sea bass sashimi zhuzhed up with yuzu, truffle oil and salmon roe (though one could do without the fish eggs, as they just end up rolling awkwardly off the sashimi), and black cod wrapped in aromatic hoba leaf. Be prepared for some elaborate plating, such as with the dessert platter which fashions fresh Japanese fruits, puddings and jellies into a something more akin to ikebana than your regular sweets presentation.
