Unkai may look like a hodgepodge Japanese restaurant offering a wide-range of dishes from sushi and sashimi, to the teppanyaki bar, a kaiseki menu, even a hotpot. The philosophy seems to be that of “whatever you crave, we are most likely to have it.” The sashimi was of good quality, but you primarily go here for the teppanyaki. The Akasaka course, which started off with a succulent green lobster, is followed by a sweet and chewy Tasmanian abalone. If abalones are not your cup of tea, simply ask the staff to swap another dish—you can’t go wrong with their scallops. For the beef, choose the ohmi beef which is more flavourful and less fatty compared to the standard prime US beef sirloin slice. Try to make some room for the lobster head miso soup, which uses the tomalley to add an intense zing to an already savoury broth. The drinks list is comprehensive and impressive. From a variety of sake sourced from different prefectures across Japan, to reds and whites from the world’s major producers, Unkai is ready to satisfy the most discerning palate.
