The longstanding restaurant at The Venetian Macao isn’t just a place for gamblers to fill up their stomachs in between bets; it’s also popular with the local Chinese. North’s menu champions dishes from the Dongbei and Sichuan regions of China with mild to ‘mala’ (numbing) levels of spiciness— signature dishes include the slowcooked sliced fish in spicy broth and crispy Beijing-style sweet and sour prawns. The homemade egg and chive dumplings are wrapped in a thick and doughy skin that is both filling and satisfying; the filling is a mix of fluffy scrambled egg, chives and vermicelli. For dessert, pan-fried pancake with pistachio and almond is a fresh take on the usual red bean. The spacious, red and black-themed dining room is centred around a rectangular noodle bar, where diners can get up close and personal with noodle chefs who masterfully pull, cut and boil the various types of noodles to perfection. The flying dagger noodles, hand-cut into varying degrees of thickness, are a must-try. Language proved to be an issue at times but the service remained personal, attentive and non-intrusive.
