Set on the 28th floor of Hotel Okura, with views across to Cotai Strip and its many casino resorts, Yamazato is something of a sanctuary, with its unusual lighting fixtures, elegant screens and muted tones. The menu is reassuring—while it offers the highlights of Japanese cuisine, from sashimi and sushi to tempura, hotpot, grilled dishes and rice and noodle options, it is not overly extensive and, with personable staff on hand to offer excellent recommendations, Yamazato delivers an enjoyable—and delectable—dining experience. The delights are in the details with homemade soy and tempura sauce, as well as pickles, plus beautiful presentation throughout. It goes without saying that fish is of the finest quality with highlights including the sashimi and sushi. Balance is key, with lightly battered tempura that is never greasy and a beautiful grilled cod whose miso marinade allows the quality fish the shine. Pair the plates with a selection from the comprehensive sake menu—perfection, particularly as staff ensure your glass never stays empty.
