TATLER SAYS
Charming and quixotic in equal measure,
The Aubrey is Mandarin Oriental’s foray into the world of “casually fine” restaurants, offering a premium quasi-European take on the ubiquitous izakaya. Admittedly, the clientele here is more silver fox than salaryman: unsurprising, given the Japonisme-inflected interiors and presence of three, thematically distinctive bar experiences.
The venue’s kitchen serves up a solid cross-section of casual Japanese bites alongside racier inventions like a white miso soufflé; but it’s the beverage programme that is the true glue that binds everything together— offering some muchneeded insight into the shadowy world of Japanese liqueurs and brewed rice wines.
SIGNATURE DISHES
• Hokkaido uni and salmon roe
• Wagyu oxtail and bone marrow fried rice
• White miso soufflé
