Neighborho­od might be the one restaurant to reach the top echelons of Asia’s dining establishm­ent without making a purist’s sense of consistenc­y its goal. That’s not to say that the cooking ever disappoint­s, nor that the signature chicken rice (an entire salt-baked bird cut into pieces and served in a casserole of rice, morels and yellow wine) could ever be anything less than the comfort food to heal all wounds. But chef David Lai delights in the art of surprise with a menu that changes by the day, showcasing his latest flashes of culinary wit—pigeon eggs served like escargot, beef tartare topped with burrata, and whatever fish insanity makes it into that night’s rice soup or paella. No meal here should ever be the same.

TATLER TIP

Save room for dessert—either the French toast with black truffles or the chocolate palette—by eating only half the chicken rice and taking the rest to go.
