On a cor­ner in the quiet grid of

Tai Hang stands El­e­men­tary, a min­i­mal­ist, con­tem­po­rary restau­rant that of­fers up a care­fully thought out se­lec­tion of dishes de­signed for shar­ing. Cat­e­gorised un­der light, medium and heavy, high­lights in­clude the hamachi ce­viche (light) which sees an al­most but­tery cured fish com­ple­mented by the umami of sea as­para­gus and the kick of green chilli dress­ing – each el­e­ment in ideal mea­sure; the rarely seen duck heart ke­babs (medium) served with a pars­ley vi­nai­grette that helps to en­liven the meat; and the sticky lamb ribs (heavy), served pink with a rich sauce and a re­fresh­ing slaw. The chilli crab pasta (medium) is a pop­u­lar choice, rich in seafood flavour with lemon zest crumbs adding tex­ture. A suc­cinct wine list sees most of its bot­tles also avail­able by the glass and all very rea­son­ably priced.

Turn to dessert and the stand­out is the ice cream sand­wich with a se­lec­tion of homemade ice creams avail­able as fill­ing, rang­ing from creamy vanilla to a salt-sweet salted egg yolk that’s big and bold. Ser­vice is warm and friendly and adds to an ex­pe­ri­ence that is ca­sual and re­laxed and fresh.
