In this modest Happy Valley location it was the food, not the compact dining room, which definitely did the talking and made for some of the city’s very best Italian cuisine. A sensational amuse set the tone—a tiny wobbly Parmesan flan with a deep-fried dough ball and peppery rucola.

The classics were simply peerless—brilliant burrata with vibrant tomatoes, perfect rigatoni with a typical Sicilian agrodolce sweet-and-sour sauce. The famous lobster had run out on our visit (we recommend requesting this dish in advance when making reservations) but the uni risotto was truly one of the most delicious, decadent dishes we can recall. Chef Angelo Agliano worked for years for Joël Robuchon, who once said he made the best risotto he had ever tried—and we believe it. Tiramisu is a dessert that can be found everywhere, but the simple and delicious recipe from Angelo’s mother takes some beating. An Italian-heavy wine list, solid service and excellent desserts rounded out an experience which truly captures the simple but sensational flavours and textures of Italy—and its signature hospitality.
