For one of those evenings when you’re craving Japanese but nothing in particular, Gonpachi is the place to be with an extensive menu from sumiyaki charcoal grill to hotpot to soba. A large den with tables for groups and cosy bar seats for couples, the space is inviting in its casual set up but definitively upscale when it comes to the food quality. Perfectly breaded on the outside and cloud-like on the inside, the crab croquettes are a universal crowd-pleaser as a starter but it is recommended to skip the sashimi and sushi offering and go straight for the luxurious Miyazaki A5 wagyu beef sirloin with baby green pepper and tender tsukune (ground chicken) from the grill. Finish off with the Miyazaki sweet potato—just like the kind you may remember from a blistering winter’s day. What is lacking in the raw bar is made up for in service by an attentive, warm staff that never leave your glass empty, yet never intrudes.
