There’s a time and a place for nostalgia, and for moments when we’d like a break from the latest trends in interior design and gastronomy, Hugo’s is the restaurant we call upon. Dedicated to a by-gone era where gueridon service and hefty, protein-forward portions of solidly executed classics are de rigueur, this European stalwart has plenty going for it. Start with the unbeatable steak tartare prepared tableside to your liking—staff will happily add more capers, use fewer onions, or splash extra brandy dressing depending on your preference. Lobster bisque is another dish that gets the trolley rolling back, with the brandy added and flambéed at last minute. Note that most of the main courses are generously proportioned— a Dover sole meunière is large enough to share among two— rendering a classic three-course meal per person slightly over the top. Desserts also comprise some classics from yesteryear, such as crepes Suzette with French vanilla ice cream, and cherries Jubilee, both—you guessed it—flamed tableside. An enjoyable restaurant with plenty of theatrics.
