-

The SWD cricket team continue to march forward when they defeated the highly rated visitors from Pretoria and fellow log leaders in Pool B – Northerns – by 28 runs in a Cricket SA Provincial One Day competition match.

The match was played at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn on Sunday. Prior to the match, both teams were unbeaten after three matches.

SWD who were put in to bat posted 271/7 thanks to a third-wicket partnership of 163 runs between Jean du Plessis – who was run out on 99 (112 balls; 3x6 and 5x4) and Obus Pienaar (63; 64 balls, 1x6, 6x4).

They set a new SWD record for the 3rd wicket partnership in one day cricket – the previous one of 145 was held by Andrea Agathagelou and Neil Horbuckle – vs Namibia (2016/17).

Northerns responded with 243 all out, and although the ground fielding of the home team was inconsistent, two critical run outs secured a SWD victory.

Dangermen Andrea Agathagelou and Leus du Plooy who added 53 runs proved to be both threatening batsmen and their run-outs secured a SWD victory to take them to the top of the points table in Pool B.

For SWD, Marcello Piedt (2/38), Hershell America (2/41) and Tsepo Ndwandwa were the pick of the bowlers.

SWD’s next assignment will be against Northern Cape at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn this coming weekend.
