You can’t choose your family, but that doesn’t mean that family isn’t important. However, because of lockdown and Covid-19, many people are likely to be far from their relatives, or unable to see them. Luckily we have technology to our advantage, and spending quality time with family is (quite literally) a click away.

Here are a few of our favourite apps that help us keep in touch with our loved ones:

Houseparty

This app takes the formalities out of a gathering. Up to eight people can video chat at the same time, and it has fun games for the entire family to enjoy at the same time. Games include Heads Up!, Trivia, Quick Draw!, and Chips and Guac. The latter is similar to the word associated game, Cards Against Humanity.

Although this free app provides loads of fun, it might not be as user-friendly for non-social media users.

WhatsApp Messenger

Oh, trusty WhatsApp. Everyone has it, so we might as well use it to video call family and friends. The downside is that only four callers are able to join one video call at the same time, but if that’s all you need, we say go for it.

Skype

Most readers have probably had some encounter with Skype, so it’s no surprise that it made this list. Skype is pretty straightforward to use, and allows 50 people in a call - talk about a family reunion!

Facebook Messenger

Ah, Facebook - the older generation can’t get enough, and the youngsters swarm to Instagram, Snapchat, or whatever the new trend is (did someone say TikTok?). For those who still have an account, the video call option in Facebook Messenger is easy to use, and up to eight callers can join. The downside is, you need an account and the Facebook Messenger App.
