Hand Surgeon Fellow of European Board
Dr Pieter Jordaan, a specialist orthopaedic hand surgeon of the Garden Route Hand Unit in George, is the first South African to have successfully passed the European Board of Hand Surgery examination (2021), which enabled him to become a Fellow of the European Board of Hand Surgery.
Dr Jordaan moved from the UK to join Dr PC Pelser in 2019. Dr Pelser completed a Hand Fellowship at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia and founded the Garden Route Hand Unit in 2016.
This is the only hand unit in the Southern Cape and Karoo region and treats patients from Swellendam to Gqeberha and as far north as Beaufort West. What makes the unit unique is the collaboration between two internationally trained orthopaedic hand surgeons. Adding to the uniqueness of the unit is the close working relationship between the unit and Dr C Patel, a plastic hand surgeon with an interest in micro hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and severe hand trauma. This combined expertise enables the Garden Route Hand Unit to provide treatment for all hand conditions, from minor injuries such as nail-bed injuries to severe injuries such as severed fingers and hands. Dr Jordaan said, “We treat all diseases and injuries of the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow, as well as peripheral nerve conditions. This includes pain caused by arthritis, ganglions, tendon and nerve conditions.”
Dr Jordaan was fortunate to have worked under one of the leading peripheral nerve surgeons in the world. Peripheral nerve surgery deals with nerve conditions of the arms and legs, such as nerve trauma, nerve compression, neuroma and painful nerve conditions, and even nerve transfer surgery to restore motor function in paralysed muscles.
