According to the Mossel Bay Municipality, the progress on the new Dana Bay entrance road may fall slightly behind due to potential graves identified on the site, and the appointment of the heritage specialist who will take some time assessing the project and influence the process.
In a statement from the municipality the status of the project to date was described as follows:
The survey is complete as per the feasibility study; environmental - botanical specialists - completed; notice to Heritage Western Cape submitted; heritage specialist enlisted; the notice of intent submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEADP); Fresh Water Specialists busy with compiling of report.
The statement also noted: The Basic Assessment Report (BAR) is being compiled; waiting for Territorial Impact Assessment (TIA), and revised layout drawings to continue; TIA, engineering report, and project management – ongoing, design work can now start.
The municipal statement noted that possible graves were pointed out by the surveyor and had to be investigated.
The environmental consultant submitted to Heritage Western Cape a Notice of Intent, which confirmed that no heritage study was required.
Acknowledgment of receipt of the Notice of Intent, submitted to DEADP, was received on 10 January 2020.
An environmental consultant is in the process of compiling a "terms and reference" guideline for the aquatic specialist.
The environmental consultant obtained a quotation from a heritage specialist to come to confirm whether the rocks found on the site were merely piles of rocks or to mark graves.
The traffic impact assessment is almost completed. The engineering report stated that the design of the access road had started.
