Level 4: Mossel Bay economy suffering

- Louise Karsten

The latest level 4 lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic is a devastating blow to the Mossel Bay economy.

Chief operations officer at Mossel Bay Tourism, Aneli Gerber, says the latest level 4 restrictions are a setback for the struggling restaurant trade.

“The pandemic is testing the perseverance of our tourism industry and we applaud the business owners, still pushing forward with innovation and creativity.”

Gerber says, although the tourism industry by nature is resilient and bounces back quickly, this time it needs all the help it can get.

“We urge people to support local business and travel as much as possible within the region.”

Gerber asks residents to support the local restaurants takeaway and drive-in initiatives as much as possible. She says if people can’t contribute financially they should ‘like’ the social media pages and share the restaurant specials online.

Mossel Bay Business Chamber chairman Albert Wiffen says the restaurants and the tourism industry are already staggering under the impact of previous closures and restrictions.

“I estimate more than 1 000 people in Mossel Bay are without income, from this week, for the duration of the current measures.” Wiffen says it is troubling that by Wednesday, 30 June, there was still no word from government regarding renewed TERS payments.
