1 700 sign petition against pilot plant
Residents of Great Brak River and surrounds have signed a petition against the approved pilot depolymerisation plant to be built close to the Reebok brickyard on the Mobi Cast site on Sorgfontein Road. The plant has been approved despite the Great Brak River Ratepayers’ Association’s disapproval of the project.
The plant will recycle old tyres and plastic into heavy fuel oil and black carbon.
This week, 1 700 signatures were received in a petition that has been doing the rounds.
Ratepayers’ Association chairman Ronald Hacquebord says many residents are concerned about the immediate effect and long-term complications of a chemical plant, with regards to their communities and the environment.
He says apart from the signatures, many individual letters have been received.
