CLARENS

-

The R712 that descends into the valley that holds Clarens – at the foot of the Maluti Mountains – is one of my favourite roads in the world. This picturesque little Free State town, flanked by golden sandstone cliffs, has long been an artists’ haven and is an established weekend getaway for Joburgers like me.

Arrive on a Friday afternoon and you’ll discover the town showing off its busier side as it readies for a weekend of visitors. Eateries overlooking the square display posters of that week’s specials, but before I give in to other temptations, my first indulgence of the weekend is always a stop at the Eat Cheese Deli. Give me a platter heaped with charcuterie and locally made cheeses and I could easily spend a few hours people-watching as the town starts to fill up. A stop at Highland Coffee, right next door, gives me the chance to hear locals chat about the weekend ahead and find out what’s new in town, before checking in for the night at Ashbrook Country Lodge.

I’ve been visiting Clarens since I was a child and although eateries come and go, the steadfast favourites that make it so popular thankfully remain. Clarens Brewery sits in a standalone building, housing its fermenting tanks and plenty of seating. Tasting is free, but be warned, with ten tasters on a platter, it’s better to share! Line your stomach with a barrel of German sausages accompanied by your favourite brew.

For the best meal in town, I always book in advance at Clementines. This restaurant has been a highlight on every trip I’ve ever made here, serving generous portions of comfort food. During my last visit, smoky springbok carpaccio followed by a perfectly crispy pork belly made a meal I won’t forget in a hurry!
