For scones and succulents

Drive too fast and you might miss the turn-off into Karl Odendaal and Cara Viereckl’s little piece of paradise, a stone’s throw from Cape Point Nature Reserve. A dusty farm road leads to a little shack surrounded by more than 400 species of succulents. It’s here that Karl bakes his famous drop scones. There’s a fresh batch in the outside coal-fired oven every 15 minutes, so your order will always arrive fluffy and warm, ready to slather with butter and whichever of Cara’s potjie-cooked jams are in season. Vegan scones, made with aquafaba and banana and served with coconut cream, are also available.

People often miss the turn-off. I tell them ‘Slow down, this isn’t Sea Point’

For a slice of Naples

City folk who remember Limoncello from its days in the CBD as both a brick-and-mortar establishment and food truck, will be happy to know that its authentic Italian heart still beats in Noordhoek. Naples-born chef-owner Luca Castiglione (above) and his wife Cecilia beguile locals with springy, thick-crusted Napolistyle pizzas; fresh semolina-egg pasta (must-try sauce: the white wine-braised shortrib Genovese); and the freshest seafood from Hout Bay harbour in delicate red stumpnose carpaccio, dressed simply in olive oil and lemon juice, or mussels, steamed in their own liquor with fresh parsley and garlic.
