What’s your favourite nostalgic dish?
“Curry (the
Durban kind) is the ultimate! Any curry – chicken, lamb, vegetable. Even when I was little and couldn’t handle the heat, I loved curry. My grandmother would mix the curry into the rice and add lots of butter to help, and I enjoyed every bite.”
– Annzra Naidoo
“My grandmother (lovingly nicknamed Poem Poem) used to make this cold beetroot soup that she served with hot baby potatoes, sour cream and boiled eggs. Ashkenazi cuisine at its finest.” – Jess Spiro
“My granddad’s crispy roast potatoes, gloriously crunchy and salty on the outside and sweet and fluffy on the inside. Served with the best, most succulent roast chicken with buttery boiled peas and baby carrots. And don’t forget his pan-juice gravy!” – Hannah Lewry
“My mother used to make these “selfsaucing” meatballs with brown rice. Packet soup was definitely involved.”
– Kate Wilson
“My mother made
a stewed sweet potato and coconut
dessert that was served with home
made custard. And without fail every Sunday she would make bread
or knotted rolls that we had with leftover Sunday roast and homemade beetroot. The best!” – Yvette
Samaai
“My gran’s pressurecooker tripe in
onion sauce.” – Abigail Donnelly
“My gran’s home
made Cornish pasties that she made from scratch for my granddad, even though she didn’t enjoy making pastry. It was an allday affair!” – Lynda
