TRIATHLON WETSUIT

A triathlon wetsuit offers buoyancy and insulation, and is proven to speed you up through open water. Neoprene is the material of choice, while all feature a rear zipper for fast entry and exit. Prices start from £50 (at lomo.co.uk). Triathlon wetsuits are designed for the swim action so a surfing alternative is not recommended.

OPEN-WATER GOGGLES

These are designed to provide greater peripheral vision than pool goggles, which is why some come in mask form. Lens tints are different, too. If you’re racing somewhere hot, you’ll need a pair that copes with glare; in the UK, you’ll want ones suitable for mixed conditions.

SWIM CAP

The humble swim cap is designed to keep unruly hair out of your eyes. A colourful one is advised for open-water swimming so that you’re easily spotted from dry land. For warmth, however, go for a neoprene version. They really do a warming job.

NEOPRENE SWIM SOCKS

Again, these are designed to add a modicum of warmth in chilly waters, as well as helping to avoid the painful cross-toe sensation stimulated by the cold. They also add grip so can ease your passage from swim exit to T1.

WETSUIT LUBE

Even the best-fitting triathlon wetsuit can occasionally chafe. That’s where lube comes in, protecting your skin as well as allowing a wetsuit to slide on and off more easily. Ensure you go for a wetsuit lube, starting from a fiver, rather than Vaseline as the latter can degrade your suit.
