FOUR ALTITUDE LOCATIONS FOR TRIATHLETES

-

TENERIFE 2,100m

Loved by Grand Tour cyclists and triathletes alike, the Canary Isle offers quiet mountain riding and trail running at 2,100m, but if you want to adopt the ‘train low’ approach too, it’s a short trip for a sea swim. If you’re really up for a challenge head to Mount Teide, at 3,718m an active volcano and the highest point in Spain.

BOULDER 1,600m

Look to Colorado for both the altitude and attitude. Being a long-standing mecca for the elite of endurance sport, if you want to be in a triathlon bubble and reap the benefits from living and breathing both the Rockies air and swim/bike/run, then Boulder is for you.

ST MORITZ 1,800m

The breeding ground for all five of Great Britain’s Olympic medals, so there must be something to the rarefied air of the Swiss Alps. Not the highest elevation you’ll find, but endorsed by the Brownlees as a perfect retreat to put in the final hard yards of preparation before the season’s A-race.

SIERRA NEVADA 2,300m

The Andalucía region in southern Spain, not the Sierra Nevada in the USA – although you could equally head States-side for some altitude. It’s easily accessible with flights to Granada, Malaga or Almeria, and facilities such as Centro de Alto Rendimiento offer a 400m running track, 50m pool and escorted rides further up the Veleta peak at 3,200m.
